Advantages of Moving Bed Carrier

Higher effective sludge retention time (SRT): Sludge retention time is effectively the length of time that a particular unit of biological media is actively working within the bioreactor.

Lower hydraulic retention time (HRT): Hydraulic retention time refers to the amount of time the bioreactor needs to effectively treat the waste water influent. Thanks to the combination of the moving carriers with the highly concentrated biofilm, HRT is shorter for these moving bed bioreactor systems when compared to others, typically only needing a few hours at maximum based on organic load.

Responds to load fluctuations without operator intervention: Many other treatment methods, biological or otherwise, need to be diligently monitored for load fluctuations so that dosages may be adjusted accordingly.

Lower sludge production: One of the biggest issue when dealing with wastewater is the resulting sludge after certain processes. Biological systems are no different. However, because MBBR is a fixed film system, nothing is being added to the effluent so the produced sludge volume is smaller than in additive biological processes.

Less area required: Thanks to the large inner surface area of the plastic carriers and the high bacterial concentration of the biofilm, moving bed bioreactor units are more compact and occupy less land area than other biological treatment systems.

Resilient to toxic shock: In a similar vein to its response to load fluctuations, MBBR systems are also resilient against toxic shock, which is an issue with other biological treatments.

Moving Bed Carrier

Features of Moving Bed Carrier

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) media is a biofilm carrier used in sewage treatment. Its core principle is to fill a large number of small suspended fillers in the reactor to provide an attachment surface for microorganisms, thereby efficiently degrading organic matter in sewage to provide a large protective surface area for biofilm and providing optimal conditions for bacterial culture. High specific surface area, providing sufficient attachment space for microorganisms. Stable material and long service life. Stable operation. Easy installation and maintenance: The filler is directly added to the reactor without complicated installation and low maintenance cost.

Application of Moving Bed Carrier

Municipal sewage treatment:

Remove organic matter, ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen from sewage, suitable for urban sewage treatment plants.

Industrial wastewater treatment:

Suitable for high-concentration organic wastewater treatment in chemical, pharmaceutical, food processing, and other industries.

Sewage upgrading and transformation:

Can be used as an upgrading and transformation plan for existing sewage treatment facilities to improve treatment capacity.

Nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal:

Biological nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal are achieved through the combination of anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic zones.

Small sewage treatment system:

Suitable for decentralized sewage treatment scenarios such as rural areas and communities.

Preparation Before Use of Moving Bed Carrier

Before use, make sure that the environmental conditions such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature in the water are suitable to prevent biofilm contamination or damage.

Choose the corrosion-resistant mbbr carrier with a density slightly lower than that of sewage, and fill it at a ratio of 30% to 60% of the pool volume. The filler should be placed evenly to avoid agglomeration.

Control moderate aeration to keep the filler suspended and tumbling to prevent sinking or excessive wear. The first use of new filler requires a biofilm period of 2 to 4 weeks, and gradually increases the load to prevent clogging.

FAQ

Q: Do moving bed filters work?

A: There are so many positives to a moving-bed bio filter, with perhaps the only significant downside being that they tend to do very little to de-nitrify the water, and that is something that can be remedied, to a resonable degree, with a trickle tower or bakki shower, downstream of the moving bed filter.

Q: What is the principle of Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor?

A: These carriers named K1 media have a large surface for air, bacteria and contact water. The activated sludge, which is also the bacteria grows on the internal surface of the carriers.

Q: Why use a packed bed reactor?

A: The advantages of using a packed bed reactor include the high conversion of reactants per unit mass of catalyst, relatively low operating costs, and continuous operation. Disadvantages include the presence of thermal gradients throughout the bed, poor temperature control, and difficult servicing of the reactor.

Q: What is a counter current moving bed reactor?

A: In a counter-current moving bed reactor, a continuous stream of solid sorbent particles moves downward under the influence of gravity, contacting a rising gas stream in a counter-current manner. Temperature swing desorption of CO2 is considered in this work.

Q: What is the difference between a fixed bed and a fluidized bed reactor?

A: Fluidized-bed reactor produces 26–38 % more light chemicals (C5–C10) than fixed-bed. LDPE requires severer pyrolysis conditions (>520 °C) for a complete pyrolysis reaction. ABS oil is mainly composed of aromatics (72 %) whereas PP includes paraffins and olefins.

Q: What is the difference between a packed bed and a fluidized bed?

A: The pellets used in fluidised bed reactors are expected to be smaller in size than that used in packed bed reactors in order to ensure the ability to fluidise the solid and because using larger pellets will consume relatively more energy.

Q: Is a packed bed reactor a PFR?

A: The most important characteristic of a PBR is that material flows through the reactor as a plug; they are also called plug flow reactors (PFR).

Q: What is moving bed biological reactor wastewater treatment?

A: The MBBR process is based on the activity of microorganisms that attach to and grow on large surface porous solids called "CARRIERS", which float in the wastewater medium. The fundamental role of the carriers is to provide a protected surface for the growth of "biofilms".
