An Aeration Disc Diffuser is a fine bubble aeration device widely used in biological wastewater treatment systems. It is normally installed at the bottom of an aeration tank and connected to an air blower.
Compressed air is released through the microporous membrane as fine bubbles, providing oxygen for microorganisms while also promoting water circulation inside the tank.
The disc aeration diffuser is commonly used in municipal sewage treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, activated sludge tanks, MBBR systems, SBR tanks, and other biological treatment processes.
Aeration Disc Diffuser Working Principle
Compressed air from the blower enters the air distribution pipe and flows into the fine bubble disc diffuser. The microporous membrane expands under air pressure, allowing air to pass through small slits and form large quantities of fine bubbles.
Blower → Air Pipe → Disc Diffuser → Fine Bubbles → Oxygen Transfer
Because fine bubbles have a larger gas-liquid contact area and rise relatively slowly, oxygen has more time to transfer into the wastewater.
When the air supply stops, the membrane closes, helping prevent wastewater from flowing back into the air pipeline.

Oxygenation and Mixing in Aeration Tanks
The aeration disc diffuser mainly performs two functions:
Oxygenation
Fine bubbles increase dissolved oxygen in wastewater, providing the oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to break down organic pollutants.
Mixing
The rising bubbles create water circulation inside the aeration tank, helping keep activated sludge and suspended solids evenly mixed and reducing sedimentation.
This improves contact between oxygen, wastewater, and microorganisms, supporting stable biological treatment.
